Why Does Summertime Mean More Accidents?

Students are out of school and their parents are on the road taking them back and forth to summer events. Some teenagers are exercising their new found driving skills. Tourists come to town and explore the area on bicycles along with more children and teenagers enjoying summertime bicycle transportation. Tourists and residents take to the water to raft or boat. It is no wonder that auto, boat and bicycle accidents all increase in the summertime.

Increase in Car Accidents

According to insurance statistics, more teenagers are killed in the summertime than any other time of the year. They have a tendency to drive with too many people in the car and teenagers, in car general, have a lack of experience that leads them to make poor judgments. Other factors contributing to more summer car accidents include:

  • Increased road congestion. Tourists in the area increase the number of vehicles on the road. Also, tourists are unfamiliar with the roads, which may lead them to make sudden turns, which results in erratic driving. More people on the road equals a greater risk for accidents. More drivers on the road also increase the risk of road rage, which increases the chance of drivers being run off the road or crashed into.
  • Tire blowouts. Hot roads make the tire pressure increase, and if tires are worn, they may blow out. Blowouts can make it difficult to control the action of the vehicle and may lead to an accident.
  • Driving in construction areas. Summertime is a popular time for road construction. Driving in construction zones increases the risk of a car accident.

Increase in Boating Accidents

More boating accidents occur in North Carolina waters in the month of July than in any other month of the year. June comes in second. Tourists and locals are all headed to the water to enjoy their boats. Operator inexperience is the second leading cause of boating accidents. A boat driver under the influence of alcohol is the fourth leading cause.

Increase in Bicycling Accidents

More bicycle accidents happen in the summer months than the rest of the year. Tourists and locals alike are taking to the highway to enjoy riding outdoors in the beautiful weather. Children and teenagers are out of school and bicycling to various events around town. The increase in bicyclists on the road increases the risk of accidents.
