What Type of Bills Are You Receiving?

There often is confusion when it comes to the types of bills that are included in what we call a “demand package”.  With a “typical” personal injury accident, most of our clients are transported by ambulance to the respective emergency room.  Inside the emergency room, you are triaged, evaluated, given the proper medication, and then either x-rayed or discharged depending on the severity of injuries.  That is where the confusion lies.

Most clients think that the only bill would be the “hospital” bill (i.e. CMC-Main’s bill or Novant Presbyterian Medical Center’s bill), but in fact, you receive a multiple bills for this one visit.

  1. The first bill you will receive is for the Hospital Visit and level of care you receive
  2. The second bill you receive is for the Emergency Room Physician who tended to you during your visit
  3. Thirdly, there may be a separate bill for Laboratory Services (i.e. pathology, urine drug screen, etc.),
  4. Finally you most likely will receive a medical bill for your Radiology Services (i.e. x-rays, MRI’s…etc)

This does not take into account the other personal injury medical bills that a client may incur if it is necessary for additional treatment such as:

  • Chiropractic Care
  • Physical Therapy-Rehabilitation
  • Specialist Visits (Neurologists, EENT..etc)

Often times you may notice that on your personal injury medical bills it has the following statement:

“Many people participate in your care and may send separate invoices. This includes separate bills from the hospital, your doctor and any specialists who were involved in your care.”

The above statement is simply the way the hospital vaguely explains why you’re seeing so many different charges for your one visit. Hopefully our quick review of the personal injury medical bills process will help give you a little more insight into exactly what you are being charged for when you visit the emergency room.
