Automobile accidents are unexpected and can change your life drastically. No matter how careful a driver you are, it is impossible to guarantee that everyone on the road is being cautious, adhering to traffic signs and driving the speed limit.

Knowing what steps to take immediately after an accident is invaluable information that can be the difference between recovering the cost of damages caused to your car and any injuries you or your passengers sustain as a result of the accident and paying for these costs out of pocket.

To be proactive, use this as a checklist to make sure that you are taking the right steps after getting into an accident.

  1. Pull your car over to the side of the road and get out of the way of traffic. If your car is drive-able, the last thing you want to do is be in the middle of traffic. Doing so creates a hazard for everyone else on the road. If it is not safe to get out of the car or your car is immobile from the accident, turn on your hazard lights immediately and call 911.
  2. Check to see if there are any injuries sustained by any drivers or passengers involved in the accident. Ask repeatedly to make sure that no one was injured, then call 911.
  3. Exchange information with all the parties involved in the accident. You will exchange information such as names, contact information, make, color and model of the vehicles involved, drivers license numbers, license plate numbers, insurance carriers and the policy numbers. You also want to see if there were any witnesses around that may have observed the accident. Note their name and contact information. When you file a claim later, you are going to need to give this information to your auto accident lawyer and insurance company.
  4. Take photos of all of the damage and all of the cars involved immediately. Do not tamper with anything until you have first taken pictures of the scene as is immediately after the accident. Note the time of day that the accident occurred as well as the weather conditions.
  5. Seek medical attention if you feel the least bit injured. There are many injuries that may show on the surface right after an accident, but sometimes, injuries from a car accident won’t manifest until days, weeks or months later. If you were injured as a result of a car accident, you need to contact a car accident lawyer or an attorney specializing in personal injury law.
